The Premarriage Awareness Inventory was first published in 1978 and has been in continuous use by clergy for over 35 years. The resource has been updated several times over the years, and evolved into three versions to be more helpful in the particular circumstances that couples come to you to prepare for marriage (first marriages, previously married, and cohabitation before marriage). In each case the process is the same. Members of the couple complete a survey (Participant’s Copy). The pastor or counselor then transfers their responses to a Profile Copy where they can be viewed side-by-side and are sorted into topic categories. With the help of the Administrator’s Portfolio the pastor or counselor analyzes the results to identify the most important topics to discuss with each couple.
PAI is a conversational tool, not a classically developed “test.” It does not provide information comparing a couple to other couples, or offer some kind of prediction of marriage success.
